A Quickie with Will Royce

image

Sat down and got it in with downhill and freeride champ Will Royce for a quick Q&A this morning. Royce will be attending the RYE Slide Jam this Saturday in Ryebrook, NY.

FP: Where ya from?

WR: Born in Alaska, raised in Florida.

FP: Years Skating

WR: Over 10 years. I consider to have been on a board all my life.

FP: When did you get into DH skateboarding?

WR: I would say in 2008 when i got my first pair of gloves.

FP: Which do you prefer, Freeriding or downhill?

WR: Both. I get the same great feeling from sliding as I do bombing hills. As long as i’m going fast and the roads are steep im into it.

FP: Most memorable crash

WR:  So there was this one time I was making a turn at about 35 mph and i ran into a 1 inch hole in the street. I slid into the curb back first. I didn’t walk for a month. Just sat home on the sofa waiting to heal up again.

FP: You recently jumped on board with a sponsorship from Bustin Boards. How have things changed for you since? Have you taken your passion to the next step?

WR: Ya for sure. It’s provided me with a lot of great opportunities and support that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. It’s also given me the chance to attend more events than I would have been able to.

FP: Any advice for beginner dh’ers?

WR: Practice makes perfect. It’s really the only way to get good at anything.

FP: Whats the future looking like for you?

WR: Future is looking bright. Got to graduate college. I’ve got 8 classes left. Once I’m finished with that, it’s nothing but skating. I also just bought an RV yesterday. Taking it to the West Coast this summer.

Old is the New New

image

Some super cool board improvements are going down in one kid’s basement, and you’d be a sucker to throw that broken board in the trash! Jamieson Costello can tweak or add functional improvements to better your ride for a seriously reasonable price. Turning top mounts into drop throughs, rain grooving or stone grinding wheels, reshaping decks… This guy does it all! His latest project, cutting the end of the platform into a new nose on a broken Buzz Green Flex deck.

Puttin’ life back into an old deck.
